Book Review - Adite Banerjie's No Safe Zone

SYNOPSIS

Can she trust the man who betrayed her?

London-based activist Qiara Rana is devastated when investigations begin against Sameera Khan, her upright mentor at Girls Rock!, a small but reputed not-for-profit organization. She will do anything to save them from ruin. Even if it means visiting the city that still makes her heart bleed. But within a few hours of landing in New Delhi, she is being chased by a gunman and is a suspect in the murder of a high-profile businessman. The only person she can turn to for help is the man who stood her up ten years ago.

On a mission to bust an international women’s trafficking ring, Intelligence Bureau officer Kabir Shorey runs slam bang into the girl who has tormented his dreams. He is determined to protect her but can he save himself from the all-consuming passion that flares up between them all over again?

As the past and present collide, old secrets are ripped away. Treading the fine lines between safety and danger, truth and lies, love and betrayal, Qiara and Kabir discover that in life there is no safe zone.

My Honest Review

Child/women trafficking in India are very rampant. Daily we hear stories; we see on crime shows the torture, their heart wrenching stories. Some of them get lost in the vastness of this sea, while few fortunate ones are rescued and start their lives anew.
No Safe Zone is a romantic story with suspense as background or should I say its other way round.
Qiara, who works for a London based NGO - Girls Rock! embarks on a risky journey to find out where Reshma, the poster girl of their campaign had disappeared, and also why their main donor, Ranveer Khanna has suddenly gone underground. But what she doesn’t know that this journey will be like opening a Pandora’s Box and many past skeletons which were long deep buried in a closet will tumble out.
Kabir, Intelligence bureau officer, who is on a mission to unearth international women’s trafficking scam runs into Qiara whom he loved once upon a time. On one hand Qiara is a prime suspect in a murder while on other he must save her in process of unearthing the truth.
Together they start their journey to a place where they were born and has many secrets which are buried in soil waiting to be unrevealed, with a hope to find answers to the many questions they have.

I had read Adite’s Trouble Has a New Name last year which was a full on Mills and Boons story. Nevertheless had expected No Safe Zone will be on same lines. But I was wrong. Its far more different and better.
Fast paced, full of actions, emotions and full on adrenaline and characters also are well described. I liked the storyline. The manner in which Adite has mingled romance in suspense is commendable.
Each love story has a hero, a heroine and a villain. I didn’t find any character as a strong villain which I was expecting. But on second thoughts, I feel the villain of this love story is time and circumstances who played spoilsport.

Book Review - Usha Narayanan's The Secret of God's Son

THE SECRET OF GOD'S SON
by
Usha Narayanan

Blurb

‘The seas will devour the glorious city of Dwaraka. People will forget your name and your Gita. May the world perish! May the world perish!’

With this cruel curse on Krishna, Queen Gandhari plunges mankind into the unspeakable evil of the Kali Yuga.

It is up to Pradyumna to try and reverse the dire prediction. To journey into terrifying realms, confront Yama and Shiva, and to vanquish the Kali demon. In order to do so, he must shed all that holds a mortal back—his arrogance, his fears, his baser instincts… He must lead his people out of the swirling vortex of greed, disease and misery. And there is one powerful weapon still…the secret surrounding Pradyumna’s origin.

Will he uncover it in time to fight off the cataclysm?

In the answer lies the destiny of all humanity!

My Honest Review :

God’s son; One might wonder who??

Till date all have heard and read about the great Mahabharata war and its aftermath. But no one has written about what happened to Krishna and his clan after the war? What happened to Gandhari’s curse on mankind?

People have read scriptures; novels and serials are made which depict till the end of war and on Pandavas but what happened to Krishna and his family and to his glorious city Dwaraka. Did Gandhari’s curse bring evil end to mankind?

The Secret of God’s Son is a Sequel of Pradyumna Son of Krishna (which even though I have not read but I didn’t feel anything amiss). After the great war of Mahabharata, while all Pandavas and people of Hastinapur were trying to get back to normalcy, Krishna and his family were reeling under fear of Gandhari’s cruel curse. Krishna, the Dark Lord, the Saviour was cursed. Not only his life but the existence of whole mankind was in danger.

In this time of crisis it was up to Krishna’s son Pradyumna to save his father, his guru, his mentor along with his family and entire mankind.

But along with this quest he also had a task of unrevealing a secret. A secret of who he was, his true identity, the true reason of his existence on earth was yet to be revealed to him.

This book is about the journey of Pradyumna to find the answers to all the questions along with the task of reversing the curse of Gandhari.

This is the first book of Usha Narayanan which I have read and I must say I loved it. Once you start reading this novel you just can’t let it go. Its not just like any other mythology book which makes one lose interest or you can guess of what is gonna happen next. This book keeps the readers engrossed and hooked.

After finish of each chapter you are like, what’s gonna happen next? What more secrets are gonna be disclosed?

I was awed by the time I finished reading this book, as its first time I am reading about Krishna’s family and his sons. I had never hear of Pradyumna, Maya or Samba before.

Mythology and suspense - two-in-one; this book is worth a read if you love both. Medium paced, full of action detailed description which actually makes a reader visualize a scene in their mind while reading it. I did, especially the fight scene with Kali.

Some of the phrases which are worth mentioning

“As long as there is life, there will be conflict. There will always be battles between the lion and bear, the eagle and snake, good and evil. Shiva and Vishnu have the power to destroy demons forever, but they choose not to. For they know that without demons, mankind will not need Gods either. Nor will they follow the righteous path.”

Krishna said “I am the Self, seated in hearts of all creatures. I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings. Each of us is the son of God and we can be heroes too if we believe in ourselves. We too can lift Mount Govardhana with the power of our minds and win war that we face every day. This is the time to raise out voices… and our fists if need be. Remember that each of us has a chakra within us, waiting to be summoned.”

The design of book cover is beautiful. The characters and their roles, their fears, their past, their present, their secrets well explained and presented. In all, a nice book, worth a read.

Heartbroken...

Yes, I am heartbroken…

No, no one cheated me in love.

But, yes, still I am heartbroken…

            Confused??? Read on…

Past few months had been bit taxing on me; physically, mentally and emotionally, all as a mother.

A girl usually when she enters her teens, starts dreaming; about her life, about her career, about marriage, about her prince charming, about her kids… yes girls are hopeless dreamers. I too was one.

When my pregnancy got confirmed after two years of marriage I was elated. Like any other expectant parents, me and my husband, started making plans for our child.

If it’s a girl…

If it’s a boy…

What should we name him/her?

What will be his/her pet name? etc…

When my daughter was born, I was happy. I had longed for a girl, as we can always dress her in pretty dresses. But all my dreams were crushed in couple of days.

When you are pregnant, everyone pampers you but no one prepares you for the after effects. Neither was I. No one told me that how painful labour will be nor about the sleepless nights which I am gonna face. But I was lucky to have supportive parents who helped me at that time.

When my daughter’s milestones were delayed, I was worried, but still consoled myself saying she will be fine. Days gave way to weeks, weeks to months, months to years. Every time I visited my pediatric he used to say ‘nothing to worry, some kids are slow initially. Don’t worry all will be fine’. Every change of doctor, gave me same answer. There seemed to be no light at end of my tunnel.

I had a creative streak in me. I used to collect articles used for making and decorating creative arts and crafts and make articles for self or friends. Also things which we moms think our child will use it when the right time comes.

I had preserved them all for so many years … till now.

But till recently, when I was searching for something, my past came tumbling out of the closet. All the decorative materials collected over the decades; laces, sequins, various color texture papers, mehndi designs, art books and what not.

I just kept staring at it for some time… tears swelled up in my eyes. God can be so cruel sometimes. What all dreams a woman weaves when she is pregnant with her first child. How cruel fate can be???

No, I won’t post a picture of my collection. I gave away all my collection to someone or other who will make use of those materials and create masterpieces.

Why?

I don’t have that creative streak or patience or energy in me now. And also taking care of my daughter 24*7, household work and my small home venture takes most of my time and energy now-a-days.

But yes I was heartbroken when I saw all those things which I had accumulated and which I gave away with heavy heart to those who might make a good use of it. And I don’t regret it.

But still I am heartbroken.

It was not easy to part away with things from your past. It never is and never was. But with heavy heart I let them go.

This is not only me but story of most mothers of differently able kids who sacrifice everything, just for sake of their child; hoping things will be normal. One day they will experience normal parenthood, kids will enjoy normal childhood, have a normal life.

But most are left heartbroken. I know after reading some will say, I am depressed, I am having negative approach of life.

I won’t deny. But has anyone tried to understand the life or feelings of mother of a special needs child. I am happy when my daughter takes a teeny weeny step forward, however small her improvement might be, but I am happy yet sad.

But when we see other kids of same age or kids of our friends, colleagues or relatives, our heart cries, though our eyes don’t shed tears now. They have dried long back. Being a mother is not easy and being a mother to differently able child is even more difficult.

WE are heartbroken but not broken. WE are tired but have not given up. WE have fallen but after some time WE will get up, pick up pieces and go forward. Because, a single word uttered, a single step taken, a single milestone achieved, a single task done is a big reward itself for us.

That doesn’t mean we have stopped dreaming. No. Our dreams have changed. Our goals have changed. Sometimes we still dream all will be normal, even though we know it won’t. That’s not negative approach but we are being practical.

Though heartbroken, we hope. We hope for a better future for our kids, a secure future.

Some might take it as a rant or I am venting my frustration. But if voicing our sentiments, our feelings are labeled as frustration, so be it. And these are not my words/feelings alone.

But of all mothers who have sacrificed their dreams, their careers, their ambitions, everything just to take care of their little ones… be it normal or a differently able child.

Some might say, what so great about it, its our duty to take care of our children. Yes, it is but aren’t we humans too. Don’t we have our dreams? Why should only we sacrifice and go unnoticed?

A woman’s life is not easy as it seems, though very few seem to notice.

Salute to all moms out there, who go with their daily chores with a smile on face whereas in reality their mind and body is begging for some rest and a break from their daily routine.

Hats off to all moms.

Review-The Mahabharata Code by Karthik K B Rao

THE MAHABHARATA CODE
by
KARTHIK K.B.RAO

Blurb

"The Mahabharata Code is a personal account of the main protagonist Narayan Rao (NR), who claims to be an astronomer with NASA. NR and a few other crew members agree to take part in the NASA mission to visit this mystery planet from which they had received mysterious signals. Here, they meet a man with a long flowing white beard, and he introduces himself as Vyasa. He reveals that he has a crazy plan in mind and seeks NR and his members’ help in implementing this plan. He intends to recreate the entire Mahabharata on this planet to restore the faith of the primitive simpletons here.

As the Mahabharata incidents start unfolding, NR realizes that Vyasa intends to recreate them page by page here, if not paragraph by paragraph. Also NR begins to realize that his son, Krishna, who is being groomed by Vyasa as Vishnu’s avatar, is nothing more than a pawn in Vyasa's scheme of things. Other incidents of Mahabharata also unfold according to the original epic. Pandavas and Kauravas grow up hating each other and finally the restaging plan culminates with both the warring sets of cousins facing each other in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Inexplicably, like the original epic, Arjuna develops cold feet seeing his own cousins, teachers and relatives on the opposite side. He seeks Krishna’s divine intervention. Is the brainwashed “alien” Krishna prepared for this intervention?"

My Honest Review

The Mahabharata Code…. Yet another retelling of the Mahabharata or is it?

Catchy isn’t it? Yes, I too got interested by reading this tag line. Recently I have been reading lots of mythology or better say revised versions or fictional versions based on mythology. So is this book too another such book?

When I started reading I found it bit confusing and slow paced, but further I read more it turned engrossing.

The reader initially gets confused just like the protagonist what is real and what is imaginary but as the story moves forward the plot becomes even more confusing until climax. The climax reminds me of a super hit movie which was made few years ago and had similar theme.

The characters be it protagonist Narayan Rao, Shristi or Krishna are well sketched. I liked it where its written even Arjuna was jealous of Krishna. Well Krishna was not loved equally by all. Some considered him as an opponent while some as friend, some loved him whereas some hated him.

What I loved was the suspense is maintained till end, and keeps the reader guessing whether it’s happening in real or is it just an imagination of the protagonist or is he hallucinating. The part, wherein Krishna explains to his father just like he recites Bhagavad-Gita to Arjuna before commencement of the famous Mahabharata war is truly commendable.

One of the verse which I liked a lot and it holds real meaning is :

“Who is this Mahadev then? Isn’t Shiva the Mahadev?”

“Shiva, Bhrama, Allah, Vishnu, Paramatma, Brahman, I, me, myself, Almighty, Jesus, Shakti, science, zero, impotent, idiot, crazy, Buddha, money, music, alien, woman, nature, computer programmer, mathematician and err, off late, Sachin and what not! I can think of atleast three hundred and thirty million names named after me!”

Though slow paced, some might even find it boring but it’s a definite worth a read. The link and reasoning of each of mythological events with science makes a reader think, whether its true or just a fragment of writer’s imagination?

If you want to do some serious reading and like mythology and science then this book is must read.

Review-Rightfully Wrong Wrongfully Right by Varsha Dixit

RIGHTFULLY WRONG, WRONGFULLY RIGHT
by
Varsha Dixit

Blurb

Love is in the air again…this time it’s steamy, bold and manipulative!

Gayatri and Viraj both are products of childhood trauma. Yet they were able to survive, one because of her shrewdness and the other because of his genius. Rightfully Wrong Wrongfully Right, the final part in the best selling ‘Right and Wrong’ love trilogy is the story of these two damaged souls.

Gayatri Dutta, the poster child for rich spoiled diva is fighting to escape a life of servitude her tyrant father is hell bent on pushing her into. Her past string of failures have her backed against a wall. Lonely and desperate!

Viraj is a con who uses his genius to perpetuate his isolation. His life once of violence and abuse has left him cynical and cold. He shuns the society and its hypocrisies.

And then Gayatri and Viraj cross paths. She needs him and he despises her.

To Viraj, Gayatri, is the epitome of all that he despises, shallow, manipulative and the kind who uses her beauty as a weapon. Or is she?

Gayatri sees Viraj only as a means to an end. She is sure that Viraj with his nerdy demeanor, owlish glasses and crude behavior will be easy to manipulate and walk over. Only he isn’t!

Excerpt from #RWWR
‘I can do this, I can do this, I can...’ Gayatri wound her fingers tightly around her cellphone as she made her way to the cubbyhole Viraj called his office. I did not expect a freaking hug, but a polite ‘how are you’ wouldn’t kill that man. She rapped her knuckles on the door.
Viraj swung the door open. ‘What?’ His brows were furrowed and his lips, pursed.
Gayatri remembered what Nikhil had said to her once. Dr Viraj owns and runs this lab. He was the only one you needed to impress! ‘It’s my first day here!’ Gayatri could hear her voice shake. ‘Could you tell me...
Gayatri scuttled out of Viraj’s way as he leaned out. ‘Find an empty room, do your work there. You are free to leave any time you want. You are free to come or to not come.’ The door shut on her face.
Flabbergasted, Gayatri kept staring at the door. What just happened? She cleared her throat. I should not piss him off anymore. ‘Thank you for this…this job.’ Her voice was as uncertain as the look on her face.
Viraj tugged the door open again. Gayatri flashed a smile at him and opened her mouth to speak but he stopped her short. ‘I don’t like talking. Find a room and stay there.’ He shut the door on her again.
Asshole! Gayatri fisted her hands and retreated. I can do this! I am doing this! Bigger picture, please! Gayatri paused and peeped inside the first lab that she stumbled upon. The place was quiet except for a low hum of machines. Gayatri pushed the doors open and walked inside the lab. It was empty. ‘Does anyone else work here besides the mad scientist?’ She leaned against one of the steel racks. The door flew open behind her. With a big grin she turned to greet the person coming in. ‘Hi! I’ she froze. It was the mad scientist with a bunch of papers in his hand.
Viraj noticed Gayatri at the same time. A familiar irritation flashed in his eyes. ‘Not this room. Not my lab! Find another room!’ He spoke with cool authority.
‘I was just looking!’ Gayatri smoothed her ponytail trying to mask her nervousness. He had her in knots.
Giving an indifferent shrug, Viraj walked past her. Gayatri got a whiff of his aftershave; it smelled clean and crisp, like water with a twist of lemon. At least he doesn’t stink like his manners! Gayatri stood there quiet and confused.
A loose paper slipped from Viraj’s hand and landed on the floor.
‘You dropped some paper!’ Gayatri said, her voice friendly.
‘Ignore it. Like you, it is not going anywhere.’ Viraj pulled a portable stool and took a seat in front of an electronic panel fixed to a bigger panel.
Gayatri gritted her teeth and grinned with the ferocity of a wild animal that could pounce any moment.
Unknown to her, Viraj gave a similar smile except his was more like the wild animal that had pounced and won.
‘I’ll go and find a room. Thank you!’ Swiveling on her heel, Gayatri headed for the door.
Something stopped herher father’s face and the realization that two weeks ago she had physically fought for herself, and now she had to fight again but with her mind instead of hands. I have to win over Mr Madness. Maybe I could wear a beaker over my head and tattoo the periodic table on my arms!
‘If you are trying to open the door telepathically, let me be the first to tell you it is not working!’
Gayatri exhaled noisily. Scathing and sarcastic, what more could a woman ask for? Taking a few calming breaths, she slowly pivoted to face Viraj, specifically his back as he sat hunched fiddling with the panel in front of him.
‘I’m sorry if I have offended you somehow. I really need this job. And also, I’m qualified for it. I can show you my degrees. I can really make a difference here.’
Hearing Gayatri’s words and her apologetic tone, something melted inside Viraj...again. But to keep up appearances, he turned rude. ‘I’m busy!’ he barked.
‘Please Mr Viraj, give me’ Just then, without warning, someone swung the door open. Gayatri wasn’t prepared for the push. ‘Ouch!’ She toppled. Her desperate hands grabbed the first thing in the vicinitya steel rack. The rack shuddered violently and some of its contents landed on the floor.
‘What the hell!’ Viraj bellowed jumping to his feet.
Gayatri winced. A large electrical component had crashed into her hand ‘The door just opened, pushing me in,’ she said shaking her arm in pain.
Viraj glared at the door. He instantly lost the frown and his mouth eased at the ends. ‘Oh it’s you! Come inside!’
Huh, Hyde turns Jekyll! Gayatri spun around.
A timid, bespectacled, five-foot-nothing girl, her long hair in a tight braid, clad in a pastel-coloured salwaar kameez, stood at the door. Her skin was smooth and her hands kept tugging at the dupatta around her neck ‘Sorry to interrupt! Dr Kalra wanted to show you some tests he is about to run in lab 2.’ She then glanced at Gayatri. ‘I’m sorry if I hurt you. It was an accident.’
Gayatri was about to speak but Viraj cut her off. ‘She’s fine. Let’s go!’
Viraj went out with the girl, not even sparing a glance at Gayatri.
Astounded, Gayatri watched them leave.

Urghh…the shit-faced scientist actually smiled and that too at that girl! Gayatri kicked the steel rack. It shuddered again! Shoot! Before anything else would fall on her, Gayatri went after the scientist and the simpleton.

My Honest Review :

What a perfect end to the trilogy…Awesome.

Readers who have read first two books of Varsha Dixit’s Right-Wrong series, and are looking forward to read third part, let me warn you this is way too different from the previous two.

No, don’t worry, it is a love story, it’s not boring or a disappointment but it’s different than the other two.

Like others, I too had waited to lay my hand on this book since Varsha had posted first two chapters on her website. But the wait was worth.

First of all, Varsha a befitting end to the series, absolutely loved it. While the previous two books had a whole lot of Bollywood influence; songs, titles, dialogues, this book choose to differ. Even though there are references, dialogues and all but still it’s different.

Readers who have read previous two issues will know what I am saying when I say

·       Who knew Gayatri and Viraj will fall for each other?
·       Who would have guessed why Gayatri is behaving in way she is? What’s her background?
·       That Sneha and Nandini will not have to play cupid in bringing them together.

But all in all, loved the way Varsha has crafted the characters.

Gayatri the Vamp of previous two stories is the protagonist in this one and the whole story revolves around her struggle to find an identity for herself and stand on her feet. As you start reading, you start loving Gayatri, the hate which I had for her vanished. She is a fighter.

Viraj, the geek, who always has a mask on, has many facets to show and to be explored.

Shetani (Nandini) and her friend Sneha, their drool worthy husbands Aditya and Nikhil, though play a very small but very important part in bringing these poles apart lovers together.

But mainly this story is about Gayatri and to some extent about Gayatri and Viraj. Fast paced, full on drama, romance with hint of suspense. I missed Nandini and sneha’s conversation which was not much but I feel their absence is justified.

All the characters are carried over from previous two stories, but the new ones too do justice to the storyline; be it Sana (Viraj’s supposedly love interest) or Viraj’s Mom or any other character. No one is out of place or forced in suddenly while reading. Though I feel Sana’s role could have been little more elaborate, especially her past, as why was she so possessive for Viraj, and her strange weird behavior towards the end could have been described a little more.

But all in all, interesting read, which lightens your mood on a gloomy day (as it did mine). If you have read previous two issues, then this is a must read… but in any case you haven’t read then grab all the three books, settle down with your favorite cuppa and some munchies and go on a read-a-thon. But let me warn you, once you start reading I bet you won’t move till you finish all three.

Varsha, waiting to read more of Aditya and Nandini, Sneha and Nikhil, Gayatri and Viraj kind of love stories. But don’t release in installments. The wait kills (joking). I hope Varsha you are not planning 4th book with kids of Nandini, Sneha and Gayatri vying for same handsome guy?

All 3 books highlight friendship, love and family, which plays an important role in our life. Be it Sneha and Nandini’s friendship, love between them and their husband’s or brother sister relationship between Nikhil and Gayatri… the balance is perfect. I loved the book cover…red symbol of love. Also the titles are eye catching and hilarious.

Some memorable quotes…

You were strong then and you are strong now. Your past, your pain does not own your genius. Nothing or no one owns your brilliance except you.

“Whoever provides for you, decides for you”; so true yet strong and powerful.
