Y for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a coming-of-age romantic comedy movie featuring some of the best artists in the Bollywood industry.

This film is one of my favorite, not only for the heart-warming music but also because I could instantly connect with Naina because of the way she was. Naina never got to enjoy life. She always concentrated on getting good marks in academics and how being an introvert bothered her. The locales, where the movie were shot are just mesmerizing.

I loved the acting of all the artists, the rapport they shared, could be felt on-screen too. I can watch this movie any number of times for its humor, comedy, and the foot tapping songs, and for the actors and actresses, I just love this movie. Every time I watch this film, it not only brings a smile but always drives away the blues clogging my brains.

Did you watch this movie? Which part is your favorite? Do let me know in the comments.

S for Sky is Pink

This movie is special for various reasons. It has showcased the mental, physical and the emotional struggles of a mother who is taking care of a child with special needs or who is a caregiver or a caretaker of that child. Most of the films portray or showcase the difficulties that a child faces and how society sees that child but no one acknowledges or shows what a mother is going through. But in the film Sky Is Pink, Priyanka Chopra, who plays the role of a mother (Moose aka Aditi) has beautifully and very aptly shown and expressed her trauma, her frustration, her distress of what she's going through when she is struggling to bring up and find what is best for her daughter who is suffering from a very rare disease called SCID(severe combined immunodeficiency). In other words, the film is shown from a parent's point of view.

One of my friends who saw this movie told me that instead of Priyanka Chopra told me that she saw me instead because she has been seeing me for a couple of years taking care of my daughter. So it's not because she told but anyone who is a caregiver or who has observed a caregiver closely will relate to this film. No one sees the struggle a mother or what she is going through while playing the role of a caregiver. Everyone takes the mother for granted because she keeps hearing, "you are a mother so you have to do it. It is your duty". There is no such written rule that because I'm a mother I have to do it.

We have no other choice, we do a lot, we give away a lot, we sacrifice a lot, and many things go through us when we see our child suffering. A part of ours shatters and bleeds when we see other kids living normal life whereas we can't do anything except look at our children helplessly because we are just not able to do anything to reduce their suffering and drive away their pain.

But this movie is one of a kind movie that I would say everyone must watch and understand that living a life of a mother who is a caregiver be it for her child or parent or sibling or anyone it is not easy. It takes a huge toll on her physical, mental, and emotional health. She also undergoes a lot when she is playing that role, willingly or unwillingly.

Next time you come across any caregiver, don’t sympathize or preach because that is not what we need. Also, don’t put us on a pedestal, we don’t want that too. We are doing our best. And just as one pill doesn’t cure all illnesses, one treatment doesn’t suit all conditions.

Q for QSQT

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) is a special movie for me; because it was the first film we watched on our VCR in those days; it was such a unique experience in those days. Secondly, the songs in this movie are so soothing that one can hear them for hours, it's like a balm to an injured soul. Why don’t they make such songs anymore? Sigh!

When this movie was released, girls had a crush on the cute chocolate boy Aamir Khan who made his debut in this film while boys swooned over the cute, innocent-looking Miss India, Juhi Chawla. This film was one of the best and super hit movie of that era, that makes you feel good and can be viewed with the whole family.

This song is special for me because my brother used to hear it in the loop.

L for Lunchbox

The Lunchbox (2013) is a romance movie but with a difference. Neither the male lead is a rich, tall, dark, and handsome type, nor is the female lead slim, trim, drop-dead gorgeous nor does the movie has a happy ending. But their (love) story is beautiful and somewhat cute. The only regret is that the film has a cliffhanger ending, which left the audiences guessing what happened to Ila and Sajjan Fernandes.

Irrfan Khan is one such artist who delivers any character with such flair that he leaves a print on your mind. Nimrat Kaur as timid housewife Ila, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as obnoxious and loud Shaikh are some of the other characters I love.

Mumbai dabbawalas are famous for their way of working and seldom commit a mistake while delivering the tiffins. But in this movie, somehow there is an error in their network, which being a Mumbaikar, is hard for me to believe.

But still, I loved this movie and will watch it just for the brilliant acting of the three main leads of this film.

Book Review-Sonia Rao's The Magician

THE MAGICIAN
(The Tarot Trilogy Book 1)
by
Sonia Rao

Blurb

Fashion designer Sasha Kapoor always felt she'd missed out on love as she had an arranged marriage. And when her husband turns up at their 15th-anniversary party with a strange woman, she knows that her marriage is dying. With constant surprises and disasters to contend with, will Sasha ever get a chance at true love?

Shantha is much sought after for her tarot card readings on love, but can’t seem to help her own love life with a string of broken relationships behind her. Now, sparks are flying between her and a sexy bartender but will this relationship fizzle out too?

Young professionals Nilima and her husband are so besotted with each other, they give the word ‘soulmate’ a complex. Theirs is a match made in heaven…till tragedy strikes.

The Magician is a heart-warming story of these three dynamic women as they discover the meaning of true love through loss and longing.

Thoughts from the Author, Sonia Rao

Who is a Magician? If it is a Tarot Card, then it the Major Arcana card in the deck and symbolizes life-changing issues.

But if it is a person, then it is Sasha, the main protagonist of my novel, The Magician. In this urban, contemporary romance, fashion designer Sasha, who caught within a loveless marriage, now seeks true love. It is also Shantha and Nilima who face their own challenges in love and try to rise above them.

It is also every woman. This is because, as Shantha says to Sasha in the book, “Imagination is your strength. You have the power to visualize and then manifest what you want. You are the Magician.” Each one of us is The Magician because we hold within ourselves the power to create the life of our dreams.

But how did this cover happen? There is a lovely story behind it. While researching the many tarot decks online, I saw this card on the Attic Shoppe website and I knew at once that this was my “Sasha.”

Go back and have a look at the cover again. Doesn’t it just grip you too? Part practical, part whimsical, part traditional, part digital, this card, like the book, is a labour of love.

The designer, Bethalynne Bajema, created this card for her Black Ibis Tarot card deck.  The love she put in is very evident in the vibe one gets from it. Every time I see it, I am inspired to bring a touch of magic to the everyday routines of mundane life.

Carrying on the serendipity, Bethalynne immediately and graciously agreed to my request to make this card my book cover. Such generosity is hard to come by and I believe it is the Universe’s way of saying “you’re right on track.”

My Review:

Narrating a story is an art. Interweaving emotions in the narrations and conveying it to the readers is a talent which only some authors possess.

The Magician – The Tarot Trilogy Book 1 is an intense, fast-paced story filled with mystery, betrayal, relationships and of course romance.

This is the first time I read Sonia’s work and I loved it. The characters are well-described; the plot is engrossing and fast-paced. I loved the mystery part and how the suspense is revealed is commendable.

While reading one can feel the turmoil of Sasha, the sadness and hurt of Nilima’s loss and love of Shantha and Danny. The Magician is roller-coaster ride on emotions and relationships. The cover image is apt to the title and story, use of simple and error-free writing, well-explained characters all make this book an interesting and enjoyable read.

The Magician – The Tarot Trilogy Book 1 is a must-read.

Review-Deep Downer's The Time is Now

The Time is Now
by
Deep Downer

BLURB

What possibly could an Ex-Major, an Ex-College Professor, a bookstore manager, and a college student have in common? Has fate brought them all together to rekindle some old flames or to start an entirely new one?

The Time Is Now is a short, sweet, unusual, un-cliched, and a mature love story. With just four main characters and one locale, the story is like a leisurely walk around the park on a pleasant summer evening that relaxes you and recharges you at the same time. It is sure to leave you with a mirthful feeling in the end and possibly moist eyes too.

My Review:

A short and mature love story in a unique writing style. As the author has mentioned beforehand that it is an experiment, I will say the experiment has been successful.

With just four characters, the author has successfully managed to weave such a touching romantic story, accolades for that.

Love the ending of the story. Nice book cover, clear and developed characters, simple yet full of suspense which is maintained till the climax of the story are some of the plus points of this book.

This is the first work of D R Downer which I read and I must say really loved reading it. The Time is Now is definitely a must read.

Book Review-Reshma Ranjan's Deceptive Baritone

Deceptive Baritone
by Reshma Ranjan

BLURB

Sitara Menon is eager to meet the man for whom she has been carrying the torch since her teenage years. She hopes to rekindle their love and romance.

Giriraj Parapuram, one of the lead vocalists of the Benson Town Rock Band, considered music, their band and his friends his world. The last thing he wanted was to come face to face with the woman who had made him lose his faith in women and love.

Sitara organizes the concerts in Denver for the US tour of the Benson Town Rock Band, eager to meet Giri, mesmerized by his baritone voice, sweet memories and an unforgettable passion.

Giri is shocked to find the girl of his dreams changed into a woman who challenges him, infuriates and brings out his baser instincts.

Will their past force them apart yet again or will their desires bring them together?

Will Sitara be able to rekindle their romance?

Will Giri be able to trust and love her again?

My Review:

A simple misunderstanding can ruin a relationship; be it between siblings or lovers. A small misunderstanding and lack of communication can create a great rift between the two individuals.

Deceptive Baritone is a fast-paced romance with a background of a music band. Sitara aka Tara and Giri are childhood sweethearts. But lack of communication, misunderstanding and other circumstances replace the love with hatred. But will they clear the air of misunderstanding and get back their love?

I liked the way Reshma has created the story plot with various layers and has no loose ends.

So if you like romance and want a quick dose of it with a hint of little mystery amongst the lovers one must read Deceptive Baritone by Reshma Ranjan.

by
Varsha Dixit

Blurb

But when Kiara’s life is threatened during a modeling assignment for the famous Kabir Rana, once a suspect for his wife’s murder, the only way Aisha can save Kiara is by accepting the unique ability she has aggressively resisted all her life.  But Aisha is not the only one with secrets. There are others who have secrets and will kill to keep them. Aisha is determined to protect Kiara even if it means placing herself in the crosshairs of a depraved killer who butchers beautiful girls and leaves them as grotesque displays.  Is Kiara a target of a serial killer or is the killer closer to home-and Aisha’s heart?  Who is Kabir Rana? An elusive and moody fashion photographer burdened with a dark past or a murderer who got away?  How will Aisha save Kiara from a killer who is several steps ahead of an entire city’s police force? When the dead come calling, will Aisha answer?  From the bustling streets of Goa to the beautiful palaces of Sirsa, Killer Moves is a fast-paced, gripping, romantic suspense tale with strong thriller and supernatural elements.

My Review:

When your favorite romance author, pens a thriller, the level of expectations are high. So when Varsha Dixit’s Killer Moves was released, I was eager to read it as I have read all her previous romance novels and have loved reading her work.

So was it up to my expectations? Well, it was more than that. I was surprised and held in awe. Just like her romance books, the story of Killer Moves is just flawless and a super addictive read.

The protagonist Kabir and Aisha, both victims of childhood tragedy are thrown together due to circumstances and sparks fly, but will it kindle the fire between them?

Varsha has definitely written a super thriller story, which gives you chills and keeps you on edge of your seat while reading it.

Awesome book cover, fast-paced story, well-defined characters are all the plus points of Killer Moves.

So if you like to read a thriller and you want to read a good book, this one is a must read.
