R for Ratatouille

Ratatouille (2007) is an animation film that I love because of its unique theme. The film is about a rat Remy, who has a sense of smell and taste and aspires to become a chef. But since he is a rat he cannot achieve his dream. One day he comes across the famous Chef Gusteau’s restaurant whose only motto in life is “anyone can cook”.

It is a well-known fact that French people are very possessive about their food, cuisines and techniques, and everything related to food. They believe it is an art that only special people or a few people can achieve or master. But Chef Gusteau stresses the point that anyone can cook.

The film is about the journey of Remy and Linguini. It is an enjoyable, humorous film that brings out a potpourri of emotions. According to the film, it is not a rule that a person has to be what his lineage is. For example, Linguini’s father is a well-known three star chef but he can't cook at all, whereas Remy is a rat who can cook wonders all he has to do is believe in himself. So I feel that it applies to every human being that we need not be typecast in the role due to our lineage or society we need to believe in ourselves and be what we want to do and not because the society wants or our family wants but what we want to do, what we like to do is important than anything else.

We need not be typecast in any role or occupation just because we belong to that family or caste or creed. It isn't a rule that a politician’s son has to be a top politician or an actor/actress's offspring has to surpass their parents in the same profession. What is your opinion about it?

M for Molly and Moana

This post is a little different than others as I am mentioning not one but two films that are my favorites. One is Molly (1999) and another is an animated film Moana (2016). Both belong to a different genre but have a lot to tell.

Molly is an autistic girl who has been living in an institution after her parent’s death. Since the institute is getting shut down she has to shift with her brother Buck, who is suddenly loaded with her responsibility and has no idea how to handle her. The film is about their journey together. The brother is suddenly burdened with his sister’s responsibility; he is frustrated and angry but at the same time loves his sister and is very protective of her and feels helpless as he can’t do anything about it. Another film named Benny and Joon (1993) which I have seen, had a similar theme.

Since it is the brother, everyone feels bad as he can’t have a life, as he has his sister’s responsibility. But when a mother is a caregiver, everyone puts her on a pedestal and says it’s her duty and her sacrifices are taken for granted. Why? Doesn’t she too have a life? Doesn’t she too feel helpless in her situation?

Moana, on the other hand, is about loving nature. Te Fiti’s heart is stolen by Maui and is lost in the ocean. Moana is handed over the responsibility of giving Te Fiti her heart back so that Te Ka’s curse is lifted. But when Moana goes to fight Te ka, she realizes Te Ka is Te Fiti, corrupted due to the loss of her heart. We have always taken Mother Nature for granted. Didn’t we see and learn a lesson during the lockdown in the past two years?

Both, actually all three movies are my favorites and are worth watching for their respective reasons.

K for Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda movie was released in 2008. It is one of my all-time favorite movies which is enjoyed by all age groups.

Out of the three movies of the series, the first one is one I like the most. It has many teachings which can help us get through our real-life hurdles.

I loved the innocent, cute Po, strict yet loveable Master Shifu, and Master Oogway among other characters of the movie in the series.

There are some movies about which you can write pages, and there are some though it has good moral and has so much to write about but rather than writing about it, you need to sit back and enjoy it and feel better at the end. Kung Fu Panda belongs to the latter category.

Kung Fu Panda is another such movie that I have watched and can watch ‘n’ number of times. What about you?
