W for Where'd you go Bernadette

Why is that every time a child is sick, a mother has to sacrifice her career, and her passion and stay home to take care of that child? Sigh! (Sadly, my Mom did the same when I had some health condition and Dad made her resign from her job and stay home so that I could be taken care of properly and recover. I can understand her plight now that I am a mother too).

I chanced upon this movie while flipping through the channels one fine day. I watched this movie for Cate Blanchett. It connected instantly and I think lot of moms who have given up their career and passion for sake of their kids or elders at home can easily relate to this movie. I love the manner Cate played the role of a frustrated, desperate mom Bernadette, who is a well-known and famous architect, and yet for sake of her daughter Bee gave away all her passion. But she is the apple of her eye and their lives revolve around each other.

I appreciate the director, writer, and Cate for showing the emotions of what of mother goes through, how she feels frustrated, and how isolated she feels when her husband, whom she trusted and loved refuses to understand her dilemma and calls her mentally unstable.

I loved watching this movie and would recommend one and all to watch it.

O for OMG: Oh My God!

We Indians are highly superstitious and spiritual. We don’t believe in our deities, but we fear them. We follow innumerable rituals, prayers, fasts, and whatnot to appease our God and Goddess to make them happy and so that, we get our wishes. But who made those rules? Who told us that if we fast for 'n' number of days we will get a good husband? Who said if a wife fast for a whole day it will give long life to her husband? If all that was true how come many wives who had observed that fast became widowed at an early age? And why are all rules and fasts laid down only for women?

My parents always say if we want to discontinue any (monthly) fast which we have been doing for a long we have to go to some particular temple and do poojas and then we can discontinue. But my question is when we start to observe that fast do we take permission or do any pooja? Then why do we need to do pooja and take permission to discontinue? I am not an atheist but I don't believe in some of the rituals and rules laid down in name of God.

OMG: Oh My God! (2012) is a comedy-drama movie that questions such beliefs and is a perfect mirror to all our superstitions and blind belief. I loved this movie and would like to say hats off to the director, writer, and the whole team for making such a mind-blowing film.

I have posted link to one of my favorite scenes below.

I for Intern

What are people expected to do after getting retired? Just laze around in the house doing small chores for their family, who don’t have time for them or keep counting till their time comes? After leading an active and busy life do we expect them to sit at home doing nothing?

Intern (2015) is a sweet comedy movie with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathway as main leads.

Ben, a 70-year man, is bored with his retired life. He tries to keep himself busy with community service etc. but is unhappy with the way life is turning out. One day he chances upon a flyer wherein they want senior people for an intern position. He applies for the post and gets selected as an intern for Jules, who is hard to please and is the boss of About The Fit.

This movie has a lot to tell and learn; about relationships of all other things. I loved the onscreen rapport (can I say chemistry) between Robert De Niro and Anne Hathway. I loved the scene where Ben tells other moms at Paige’s school that they should be proud of Jules for all she has achieved, rather than being sarcastic. There are many beautiful scenes of Ben and Jules, which make a whole lot of sense.

I loved Ben’s character, his ‘it’s never too late’ attitude and his positive attitude towards everything. I hope many senior citizens take out a leaf or two from his book and learn something.

I don’t remember how many times I have watched this movie and will do so how many more times because I just love Ben and Jules and cute little Paige too.

What about you?
